Song of the Day: Just My Luck by Obongjayar

The momentum accrued by the Nigerian-English pop artist, has been put him on watch by the indie scene. He has been around for a while, but recently just released his sophomore record this year and has even collaborated with one of the biggest forces of the UK hip hop scene, Little Simz, on her latest album, Lotus.

This pop single from last year has been infectious and contagious to my ears even after all these months. The song has words of a character who has been down on the dumps. He wants to be part of a band, be popular, and not cry as often. Why does this ear worm have to be so heart breaking and relatable? But despite this palpable pain of loneliness, he presses on.

Wrong place, but a good time.

    What a great song you chose to discuss! 

    I find it sticky and relatable. It asks the question, “Why am I always at the wrong place at the wrong time?” place and time being cognate frenemies. I’m sure most of us have experienced that moment at least once. 

    But what if being at the wrong place and at the wrong time is actually preparing you for the right place at the right time? This piece fleshes out a beautiful life perspective: most things in life are outside your control so make do with what you have right now in this present moment. “You get what you need in life, not what you want.” You can’t miss what you never had. Yet everything is going to be okay. 

    I think this piece generates comic relief out of a potential state of misery. I found myself chuckling while listening to this at work due to how accurate and applicable it was to my own life journey. Furthermore what makes this song amusing is how it juxtaposes skippy, bouncy, and upbeat musical notes against lyrics that express surprise, dejection, disappointment, and reassurance — all at once. 

    In other words, if all your worries and problems in life were written on a big messy stack of papers, this song prompts you to throw all those sheets up into the air and walk away without a care — just one brief and simple happy-go-lucky moment — and say, Que Sera Sera!

    Because afterall…

    “Just my luck — Maybe that’s not such a bad thing.”

      Thank you for the poignant reply! This song emanates a lot of pain, but it does leave a light at the tunnel. It ends off with a hopeful note at the end. Even though it is not unheard of sad lyrics being juxtaposed with upbeat melodies, I’m still always a stickler for that. Any song with layers or a dichotomy is complex enough to be good in my book.
