Song of the Day: “Rock Your Baby” by George McRae

An oldie, but a goodie. Not an oldie technically since it’s from the disco genre. Just something sweet and uplifting I wanted to share when I was crate digging for disco music. I DJ’d a house party and the theme was disco in the beginning. It was a blast and maybe one day I might share my experiences being an amateur DJ as I am a mobile DJ as a side gig. Aside from that, I found this gem of a song that really nails that 70’s vibe. So, I stumbled into the song by waking up on a disco ball and looking around all discoheads dancing with not a care in the world taking their turns in those lines. I now visualize Soul Train music videos as someone recommended browsing these relics in order to see the history of disco. I need to do a deeper dive, because there are some fabulous dances seen and tunes to be heard. Just seeing everyone in their 70’s attire having a good time is just so wholesome to me. You got the O’Jays, Jackson Five, Shirley Jones, and George McRae had a set too.

“Rock Your Baby” is from his debut and it’s the one I wanted to talk about, because even though I loved many of those earlier classics, this one escaped me and I never heard about it until I was prepping for the party. It gave me such a warm fuzzy feeling that the love that we have been searching for is well within reach, or it might not arrive. The lyrics are simple, yet leaves it ambiguous. It is produced by KC and another member of his Sunshine band and it sounds like it makes sense with how upbeat it is. Those repeating guitar licks, triplet hi-hats, and the incoming cutesy organ to echo the melody. This song while repetitive would lose luster if the melody wasn’t so damn lovely. The real kicker of the tune is his vocals going falsetto that would make Barry Gibbs nod. The song was such a hit that even his then wife who’s another singer, Gwen McCrae made a charted hit with “Rockin’ Chair”, another disco bop I enjoyed. Fun fact, George provided backing vocals to “Rockin’ Chair.” It sounds like a dream of two artists teaming up, but alas, they divorced not too long after. Sadly, that seems inevitable when two artistic minds clash in the same space. And sadly I found out Gwen McCrae passed last year. Now, it seems like that era is a dream. As of now, George is now with a Swedish model for his wife and they’re still together to this day. The single while sweet, has led to a rabbit hole that went to a sad ending. But what they left, is still an uplifting romance.

Will she take his hand?
